INTRODUCTION

Available now: Original items based on the work of the popular Taisho – Showa era illustrator, Koji Fukiya.
The world of Koji Fukiya, as seen through his illustrations, book design and illustrated poetry, has been updated in a modern line of products.
2007 marks the year of the Koji Fukiya Retrospective at the Tokyo Yayoi Museum and the Niigata Bandaijima Art Museum.
The design and art direction is by the iconic Naoyuki Suzuki of Tycoon Graphics, whose work ranges from record sleeves to the logo of Omotesando Hills.

Koji Fukiya Profile

Born in 1899, Shibata, Niigata
Fukiya made his debut in 1920, producing illustrations for "Shoujo Gahou," a magazine aimed at adolescent girls.
He extended his fame as a star illustrator through his works for various magazine covers and nine illustrated poetry books.
At the age of 25, he published his best known poem "Bride Doll." After his return from Paris in 1929, he swept the world of illustration in Japan with his modern style.

Shibata City, Niigata Prefecture, Beacon Project ~ City Branding Project

This project is made possible by the Chamber of Commerce and Industry of Shibata City, Niigata Prefecture, the hometown of Koji Fukiya.
The city, together with the Koji Fukiya Memorial Museum, will deliver the artist’s images through a series of events in the hopes that these images will become a symbol of the castle town.
This project was begun in the summer of 2006 by the citizens of Shibata, and Fukiya’s work, known for its range of styles, was chosen as a result of a popular survey.
The designer and art director, Naoyuki Suzuki, also hails from Shibata City. The project was thus launched in 2007.

Koji Fukiya Product Concept

All items, at once retro and avant-garde and Japanese in taste, were designed with the modern woman in mind.
We hope you will find a keepsake among these items and more broadly in the world of Koji Fukiya.

Koji Fukiya Logo and Original Tag

Long-selling items are marked with the original logo and tag.

The Logo

You may have noticed the unique and playful signatures in Koji’s illustrations. Among them, there is one that uses the first character of his name, which means “rainbow” that is made up of a heart and cupid’s arrow. This signature was chosen as the logo.

The Original Tag

Printed on the front is an image of “The Bride-Doll”, considered Koji’s most important work. On the back are the URL of the Koji Fukiya Memorial Museum and other information on Koji Fukiya.

Shibata City, Niigata Prefecture

Shibata City, Koji Fukiya’s hometown near the Sea of Japan, is a city rich in nature.
With the medieval Shibata Castle at its center, the historic city is reminiscent of the Showa period and of Koji’s world, and is the ideal setting for a stroll.
The Koji Fukiya Memorial Museum, now the hub of the city’s tourism, was established in 1987 and designed by the architect Shozo Uchii.
Every year, events such as the “Koji Fukiya Story” and the “National Bride-Doll Choral Ensemble Competition” attract fans from the city and beyond.
